Completion of the Quest

June 11, 2010 by Drew

I realized today that I finished Quest the Second!  Once Upon A Time IV is, for me, over – and I’m glad I could have been a part of it.  The books all counted towards the Cannonball Read II, which was an added bonus.  Love that two-bird-one-book thing. For the Quest, I had to read one book in each of the four categories.  For those who like neat and tidy organized lists of things (like me), here you go: Fantasy […]

There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor’s Baby: Scary Fairy Tales

June 11, 2010 by Drew

So after Cloud Atlas, I’d intended to hop right into the second Steig Larsson book and then into The Shadow of the Wind… but I needed a palate cleanser.  I needed something light, something that wouldn’t require much investment – and what better place to turn than a short story collection? I’d been hearing about this collection for some time – this woman is apparently the best Russian author I’ve never heard of.  Plus, I love scary fairy tales.  So […]

Sharp Teeth

April 29, 2010 by Drew

This book has been on my radar for a while now but the concept of a novel in free verse… I don’t do too well with poetry.  I usually find it pretentious (and that’s saying something, right?) or boring or ham-fisted.  Free verse, for me, is usually the worst – I just feel as though the poet was too lazy to write prose or that they wanted to seem hip and chic by randomly breaking up lines into a verse […]

The Wild Things

April 25, 2010 by Drew

So, after a fair amount of time caught in the spell of Gravity’s Rainbow, I’ve once again jumped back into devouring books like PEZ (incidentally, ate a lot of PEZ in the last 48 hours).  I thought originally that The Wild Things would be the perfect light re-entry into “other books” after the density of Pynchon but – despite reading it in less than a day – I was definitely wrong.  If anything, this book was heavier than Pynchon, in […]

Turn Coat (The Dresden Files, Book 11)

March 21, 2010 by Drew

Alright, this is what I was talking about!  Something fun, something exciting, something well-written, and something (above all else) thoroughly enjoyable. I found The Dresden Files first through the short-lived SciFi show… which I promptly forgot about after an episode or three… and then, later, through the awesome covers of the Orbit paperbacks in England.  See, the American paperbacks look like what I might call “slum fantasy” – they’re made for the people still playing Magic: The Gathering at age […]

Once Upon A Time IV

A Challenge!

March 20, 2010 by Drew

So I’ve been seeing a number of various OTHER “reading challenges” around the blogosphere (can’t believe I just used that term in a serious fashion…) and this one – well, it’d be hard for somebody like me to pass this one up: Once Upon A Time IV I’ve yet to decide which challenge I’ll be undertaking – it may end up being The Journey as I’m not sure I’ll be able to find one book for each category… but hey, […]
