Sweetbitter

May 23, 2016 by Drew

The Short Version: In June 2006, 22-year-old Tess arrives in New York City. She soon finds a job working at a prestigious restaurant in Union Square and falls under a spell: the spell of the city, the spell of the restaurant, the spell of her older colleague, the spell of a handsome bartender, and more. The Review: There’s nothing in the world like coming to New York in your early twenties. I can’t say for sure but I’d argue that no […]

Table of Contents, Volume 5 (April 2016)

April 28, 2016 by Drew

After Dani’s trip to egg last month for Table of Contents, Vol. 4, I knew I had to make sure my schedule was clear for Vol. 5. Not only was the author of one of my favorite books of 2015 (Sara Nović, with her amazing Girl at War) going to be there, but two authors who I was excited to discover/rediscover were there too. The updated format of the series, however, has each event feature a lineup of contemporary authors reading from their recent work, along with small dishes inspired by the excerpts. The roster on March 16th (“Volume […]

Kitchens of the Great Midwest

July 27, 2015 by Drew

The Short Version: Eva Thorvald was born to a talented, food-loving chef father and an aspiring sommelier mother. She quickly develops a love for and skill with food, leading her to eventually become the most impressive chef of her generation. This is the story, or stories really, of how she built a family of her own and how she discovered the dishes that will go into a truly once-in-a-lifetime meal that brings them all together. The Review: It’s easy to laugh off […]
