Iterating Grace

December 4, 2015 by Drew

The Short Version: In summer 2015, privately printed copies of Iterating Grace appeared in the mailboxes of several prominent tech reporters, tech workers, and other assorted tech-related folks. Now, FSG has brought it to the masses – this strange, small tome of tweets-as-art and satirical poking at the Silicon Valley way of life. The Review: I love a good mystery, so this whole “who is Koons Crooks?” thing is exciting to me. Noah Krulwin, over at re/code, thinks that it’s all […]

Witches of America

October 16, 2015 by Drew

The Short Version: While working on a documentary, Alex Mar finds herself drawn to the reality of witchcraft in American today and begins an exploration into its history and its present that becomes personal and profound. The Review: Here’s a book that, not unlike the journey it details, consistently upended my expectations and drew me in (sometimes despite itself) in ways that I didn’t see coming. Part of this is because of expectations I had going in, many of them both personal and […]

A Sport and a Pastime

June 26, 2015 by Drew

The Short Version: A young Yale dropout embarks on a passionate affair with an eighteen year old French girl, while an older (thirtysomething) narrator later recounts the tale – but how much of it is true? How much is really the narrator’s imaginings? And does it matter? The Review: When James Salter passed away last week, I was struck by the immediate need to go find a copy of this book. How had I never read it, or anything else in his oeuvre? And […]

The Making of Zombie Wars

April 13, 2015 by Drew

The Short Version: Joshua lives in Chicago and has a decent enough life. He teaches ESL, comes up with ideas for screenplays in a screenwriting group (although rarely actually commits to writing them), and has a loving girlfriend. But after an idea comes to him that might have legs, his world spins a little out of control thanks to (variously) his landlord’s psychotic break, one of his students being a bit too attractive, and his own inability to keep life in order. […]

Laura van den Berg in Conversation with Catherine Lacey at McNally Jackson

February 19, 2015 by Dani

In the past month, I’ve discovered two new favorite books. Find Me by Laura van den Berg and Nobody is Ever Missing by Catherine Lacey. Van den Berg (henceforth known here as LvdB) is getting crazy good press right now – Salon thinks she’s “the best young writer in America,” and I probably agree. Both books garnered 5+ ratings here on the blog. So I’m not alone! Much to my delight, the NYC launch of Find Me entailed a conversation between LvdB and Lacey at McNally Jackson. And it was great! Everything you […]

Find Me

February 13, 2015 by Drew

The Short Version: A virulent new disease appears in America that causes the infected to develop silver lesions and lose their memories, then rapidly lose motor control and cognitive function before death within ten days. Joy, apparently immune, is taken to a hospital in Kansas where she and several other patients wait out the epidemic. But when things take a turn at the hospital, Joy runs away and decides to head to Florida to find her birth mother, embarking on […]

Young God

June 9, 2014 by Drew

The Short Version: Nikki is 13, living deep in the country in North Carolina.  After her mother dies in an accident, she returns home to her father – formerly one of the biggest coke dealers in the county.  Once there, Nikki begins to think about taking control of her life and what it might mean to start dealing on her own. The Review: So, loyal readers will know (and if you’re just visiting, you should check out) that FSG throws […]

The Originals Series: Jeff Vandermeer & Future of What

February 27, 2014 by Drew

After our long cold winter (which is, apparently, still not over), the best book parties in New York City returned to Studio X last night – with the author of my so-far-favorite book of the year.  That’s right, folks – the FSG Originals Series (presented in conjunction with Vulture and GQ) are back.  And damn, it feels good to’ve been there. It felt like seeing an old friend, to be honest.  Not much has changed about the general setup of […]

The Originals Series: Warren Ellis & Geoff Manaugh

November 22, 2013 by Drew

ANOTHER Originals Series party, only a week after the last one?! AMAZING! Last night, FSG shook up the format of the Originals Series parties – instead of an author and musician in convo, we had two FSG authors coming together to chat about the quirky things they adore.  Namely, robbery, burglary (there’s a difference), murder, assassination, and technology.  I mean, what could be cooler? Warren Ellis, he of the epic beard and even more epic wit, was fresh off a […]
