The Shepherd’s Crown

November 13, 2015 by Drew

The Short Version: Changes are coming to the Disc. Trains crisscross the land, goblins are respectable (or at least respectable enough),  and Granny Weatherwax’s time has come. It’s up to Tiffany Aching to fill her shoes – and to do so before a deadly threat returns to the world… The Review: Clichéd as it has maybe already become, I couldn’t help but think of Chris Jackson singing, “We’re gonna teach ’em how to say goodbye” in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s brilliant Hamilton while […]

Good Omens

March 23, 2015 by Drew

The Short Version: The world was created. This is generally regarded as an only so-so idea – but the end is coming! The Antichrist is born unto… an utterly ordinary human family (thanks to a clerical mixup with the babies). And one angel & one demon, friends over the millennia, decide that maybe we don’t need the end of days to happen – but they’ve gotta find the kid first. Hijinks ensue. The world, such as it is, goes on. The […]

Raising Steam

April 30, 2014 by Drew

The Short Version: Moist von Lipwig, head of the Royal Bank and the Post Office and the Mint, has been tasked by the Patrician with yet another job: to shepherd into being the railway.  A young man has tinkered just right and created a beautiful steam engine – but progress comes in fits and starts on the Disc and there are those who would see this particular endeavor halted for good… The Review: After a fitful start to this novel – […]

Snuff (Discworld #39)

March 18, 2012 by Drew

The Short Version: Sam Vimes is finally taking a vacation.  Although he’s not quite sure what that means, per se.  The country seems… incomprehensible as compared to the city.  But a copper is a copper and there’s something not quite right out near Ramkin Hall.  Before long, Vimes is caught up in local politics and goblin nonsense and there’s even a riverboat chase involved!  So much for vacation. The Review: I’ve always been a stalwart fan of the way Terry […]

I Shall Wear Midnight

January 3, 2011 by Drew

The Short Version: Tiffany Aching is the witch for an area of country on the Disc called The Chalk.  She trained with Granny Weatherwax and some others and has done some pretty awesome things.  She’s friends with small blue men who speak like Scots called the Nac Mac Feegle.  At 16, she’s dealing with romance (sort of) and the appearance of an entity called “The Cunning Man” – a sort-of undead witch hunter who poisons people’s minds against witches.  It’s […]

Unseen Academicals

December 27, 2009 by Drew

I have been far too long away from the Discworld. 37 books, a couple of maps, some associated compendium type pieces, etc etc… and never a dull moment.  Well, I can’t entirely remember – some of the books may have been dull.  I read a lot of the older ones when I was a kid (2001-ish) and some of them have completely flown my mind while others still remain.  Regardless, Pratchett is probably the most popular British author ever.  England’s […]
